Happiness Is A Choice

Throughout life I've often assumed happiness was something you must strive for. It's something you'll recieve in return for your actions. You cannot be truly happy until certain circumstances are met. After much consideration and thought, I've realized it's the other way around.

Don't Treat Happiness as a Goal

Lots of people (including myself) have perceived happiness to be something that is determined by outside circumstances. For example, once you achieve a certain goal, you give yourself approval to elevate your level of happiness. This is all wrong. Instead you should treat happiness like a privalege. It's your right to be happy with yourself. You don't need to earn your own happiness. Nor do you have to wait for certain things to fall into place for you to be happy.

Happiness is Really a Choice

More than anything else, happiness is a choice. It's decided upon by you, not your enviroment, job, family, finances, or beliefs. Right now, you can choose to let go of the past, present, and future, and exist in the moment. In this moment you can make a conscious choice to feel fulfilled and happy. There's nothing stopping you, only you.

Be Happy Now

Choose to be happy and good things will come. It's not the other way around. Everything flows from a state of joy and abundance. There's no need to strive for it, because its already here. Let go, and let it flow through you. Happiness comes from the inside out. And once you establish this constant flow, things start to change. One book that sums this up perfectly is Happy For No Reason by Marci Shimoff. "Emphasizing a holistic approach, Shimoff takes into account mind, heart, body and soul in seven chapters that cover three Happiness Habits each, as well as corresponding anecdotes that "define what it means to be Happy For No Reason." I recommend this book to anyone who wants to feel great everyday no matter what comes up. It's a very down to earth, practical, well-written guide to finding and maintaining personal happiness.
